How to create tension in music

Basic points about how to create tension in music. These are taken from the forum discussions at the HighC. Many of these are new to me yet some are really self-explicable and you can relate to those working in your DAW (e.g. tempo, pitch, texture, dynamics, repetition).

All music, regardless of genre, makes use of tension and release as an organizing principle for sound. The musical devices you study, all have a role in creating or releasing tension. Here's a partial list of musical devices and how they relate to this discussion:

pitch: upward motion creates tension, downward motion resolves it
texture: density increases tension, sparsity resolves
interval: dissonance creates tension, consonance resolves tension
tempo: acceleration creates tension, slowing resolves it
intonation: bending away from the nominal pitch increases tension, returning resolves it
harmony: there’s a very sophisticated system of creating and resolving tension in western harmony (you can buy books and take college courses on it)
syncopation: playing off the beat creates tension, on the beat resolves it
beat division: more divisions per beat creates tension, fewer resolves tension
dynamics: louder creates tension, softer releases tension (this is debatable–you could make a decent case that moving away from the center increases tension, while moving toward decreases. Either way, change in dynamics can create and resolve tension)
articulation: shorter (stacatto) creates tension, longer (legato) releases
repetition: repetition builds tension, variation resolves it
ornamentation: ornaments increase tension, simplicity resolves it

kevkondro back to the roots

Currently i am working on the house project in reason. I have reached the demo version now. Please do have a listen and help me improve it by posting your feedback. My intention is to turn this track into a full blown tune for the deep house lovers, for the love of the genre itself. By the way as the title suggest that kind of music are kevkondro's roots in electronic music...

Free VST plugin | MinimogueVA

The Minimogue is a lead, FX and bass synth just like the real Minimoog. It is programmed to be as expressive as possible. This is a synth for the players. Modulation wheel takes a big part in the solo sounds. Also try to play long legato lines to hear the full sweep with sounds like Big drift. It is cpu friendly.

Chord Triggering and Chord Bank Setup in Ableton Live

Chord Triggering in Ableton Live from flujo on Vimeo.

I have actually tested this tutorial and do admit it yields a huge value. One thing that I must say before hand it's that you will not get chords out of nowhere only triggering a single key. First of all, you will need to build a chord bank.

If you're a wacky keyboard player like me and your fingers get tangled while trying to get a simple chord progression right that will be the video for you. I am not only talking simple chords.

You can get as complicated as you want. Just go online find your favorite piano chords pre-write them in a chord bank and then play them back using a single key of your choice (be it a root note or something else depending on your mapping).

Online 16 step sequencer iNudge

iNudge is something i have never come across. Basically, it's a 16 step matrix sequencer. It's got 8 tracks each with own sound (tone matrix melody, harp, organ, saturn, frogster, avatar, rhode bass, and a full drum kit). The sounds are very well tweaked to sound in harmony with each other. iNudge is simple to use. It's controls include tempo, pan, levels. Nothing too complicated or redundant.

You can share this music making tool with friends, be it by email or website (as you can see above). I find it very addicting viral tool for having fun and making music.

At this point it's a toy to play with or to share with friends. But i just thought i could record various 16 step sequences i made online to the computer and then got them mixed on ableton or reason into a track. Of course, to have it as VST plugin it would make thing even easier.

Infected Mushroom - Sayid @ Live! Tel-Aviv 23.11.07

My new favorite rock and roll band Infected Mushroom. I love what their doing. I love some rock hardware set in mix with psy trance synths, samples and tempo. Intersting thing that some of the sounds in their music are reminiscent of mike oldfield.

The above track is one of the best i found in their album Legend of the Black Shawarma.

kevkondro playme

This weekend i've been busy elaborating on my keyboard performance. On sunday I refined my memory and pulled the below track off my head. But, of course, it will be new to most of you. Anyway see if you can draw any parallel to lauras fairytale project. Playme is made using reason 4 for drumloops and some fx (rewired) and ableton 8 for instruments.
