Audiotechnica Alternative Christmas Tune Competition Finalists

The competition has closed for entries and we've had more than 40 entries covering various musical genres and concepts. We thought instead of just choosing a winner we'd make a shortlist of the best six videos determined by our judge Steve Levine, Grammy & Brit award-winning record producer and chairman of the Music Producers Guild.

As we launched the competition through Audio-Technica's social media channels we decided that the winner should be determined the same way by the public! So we've taken the six finalists and launched a Online Poll to decide the overall winner.

Full details are here: http://blogit.realwire.com/Audio-Technica-announces-final-shortlist-for-its-Alternative-Christmas-Tune-Competition

Presentation on Loud Music Today and More

The Loudness War: Background, Speculation & Recommendations from Earl Vickers on Vimeo.

Stop over-compressing. Don't use ear buds. Cherish your ears. Informative presentation on what's happening to music these days in terms of levels. I wholeheartedly agree there is too volume in music especially in modern so called electro house. Not only it has become totally meaningless, with little or no musical themes, now it can also lead to hearing loss due to its maxed out decibels.

The best times of compression usage can be traced back to global underground deep dish Toronto compilation back in 2003 and overall music around that time. You can feel the kick is tight, the bass is thumpy but as the same the music is lively and airy which gives it such a vibey feel. In other words, the sounds are not debilitating. Any new house that follows 2003 is being continuously made with too much emphasis on low end and primitive synth riffs.

Try to actually listen to the kick sound and musical theme in any of these tracks by deep dish (2003):

Then, listen to kick sound and themes in any of these (2009-2010):

Presently, i like what minimal tech is doing. Especially, Steve Bug's crew. Much more depth and width in their music. Interest being built upon out of this world samples, riffs, and themes rather than just making 4x4 kick kill your ears.

What are your thoughts?
