Rewarding Failure
Beautifully written post by PhilSequence at Reason101. The author talks about how failure can be rewarding to music making, and what happens if one stops fearing it. It is really something that i am dealing with more than six months now. I cannot make music no more. I am in a creative block which is so bad that I don't even try to make music anymore. Give up after ten minutes (used to be hours before).
Surely, there are some circumstances or excuses if you will, I do not have my gear with me anymore. Midi controllers, monitors etc. all got left behind. I just got my desktop PC with ableton and reason installed, but got no computer desk, so it’s basically laying on the floor. Yet, I could work something out if only I could break of my current state of mind. And such articles like this one, are just about how to tackle such problem. Have a read and you will see.

Linux MultiMedia Studio Free Music Making Software
As I await my desktop PC with Ableton and Reason, and MAYA soundcard shipped to the Netherlands ( where i live now) I tried to search for music making software products that are available out there for free. The one I stopped by was Linux MultiMedia Studio.
LMMS is absolutely intuitive, especially if you ever used fruity loops. LMMS has a pianoroll as well as a beat sequencer just like in FL. It's also got a nice array of effects and some in built instruments. LMMS supports VST but I have not figured how yet. Looks good compared to what other free software looks (dodgy colors, sloppy design).
But there's a catch. I have a i3 vaio laptop, 4 gigs of ram, builtin sound. It's not much but it should be able to handle a few samples. However, in LMMS the sound constantly freezes off or turns into noise, the software often becomes unstable. Even more so, if you start building up effects chain.
Another serious limitation I notice is that you cannot copy multiple patterns, even though there is a selector tool. You only have to do it one pattern per single track at a time. This is not helping electronic music creation is it?
May be that on Linux it works great and not so much on Windows or my laptop is too slow but if LMMS can fix these problems, especially the sound one (i could live with copy patterns one by one), I will seriously look into sequencing a track with it, for instance, using Freesound.org as a sample resource. I do enjoy simplicity in making music software and that's got one. I really liked it!
If you have had different experience with LMMS, be sure to comment!
